What is monica?
monica is a Chrome extension that replaces the new tab page with a personal dashboard. It brings together a clock, weather, bookmarks (an iOS-style home screen), and a Google apps launcher on a single screen so your day starts in one place. There is no developer-operated middleman server; data stays in your browser (chrome.storage.local / IndexedDB).
Why monica asks for Google account access
Signing in with Google is optional. monica uses your Google account only when you want to sync bookmarks and settings across devices. Google user data obtained this way is used solely to provide in-product features—not for ads, sale to third parties, or human review—in accordance with the Limited Use requirements of the Google API Services User Data Policy.
- openid / email / profile — Display the signed-in Google account
- drive.appdata — Read/write sync files in the extension-private Drive appDataFolder (no access to your other Drive files)
What it does
iOS-style home screen
Multiple named pages, folders, and drag-and-drop. Edit with long-press or E. Icons pick from custom upload, emoji, or favicon.
Google apps launcher
Jump to Gmail, Drive, Maps, and many more Google services. Show, hide, and reorder apps by drag-and-drop.
Drive sync
Two-way sync through Google Drive appDataFolder with LWW + ETag + tombstones. No middleman server.
Incremental consent
OAuth scopes are requested only when you enable a feature. Token refresh is silent-only, so no surprise consent popups.
Custom background
Background color syncs across devices. Background images stay local by default with scale/position controls; Drive sharing is opt-in.
Open source
TypeScript + React 19 + Vite + CRXJS. MIT licensed. All source is on GitHub.
Privacy-first
Zero analytics, no tracking, no traffic to a developer server. Google user data is used only to deliver in-product features (Limited Use).
